Draft Bill to Protect Consumer Privacy

Follow-up to post: Cutting Costs at the Expense of Privacy

The issue of online privacy has been an ongoing battle – companies have continued to develop methods to gather consumer data to maximize their advertising revenue in this $25 billion industry. Lawmakers finally unveiled their proposed bill to regulate privacy on the Internet. The recently drafted bill aims to protect consumer privacy and regulate how marketers are aggregating information about consumers. The legislation will require companies to disclose how they are collecting, using, and sharing personally identifying data. Consumers will also need to give consent before using more protected information, such as social security numbers, medical records and financial accounts. With this bill, the Federal Trade Commission hopes to create a more secure online environment.

Do you think these regulations will be enough to protect consumers?

FTC Considers Do-Not-Track List

"The Federal Trade Commission is considering proposing a do-not-track mechanism that would allow consumers to easily opt out of all behavioral targeting" http://www.mediapost.com/publications/?fa=Articles.showArticle&art_aid=1...

The right to opt out of use of personal information on internet

Individuals should be given the opportunity to opt out of having their personal information displayed or available in data base search engines on the internet. There are some indidivuals who for very personal, security and safety reasons have severed relationships through due processes, only to discover that search engines data base have reconstructed those relationships years after personal events have occurred, thus dragging individuals into scenarios and situations that have long cease. When this occurs, the data base companies simply for making a profit on their services, have intercepted the moving on process of the lives of individuals. Search engines data base operators and companies should stop using and treating human lives as commodoties for their own profit. Thus the opportunity to have individuals opt out of the use of their information would create a balance. Let those who choose to participate do so and those who do not want to participate exercise their right and choice not to.

I fully agree.....

I was suffering severe domestic abuse while living at home with my family and had an extremely difficult time getting away from it.  I was finally able to move away from them and was expecting to be able to live my life again until my new 'landlord' (a homeowner found on 'craigslist') found a reason to look up former addresses of mine, online.  Subsequently, this new landlord began to propagate this same type of abuse (based on false information provided by my 'family' (I never would have told them where I had been living previously)), and I was forced to start the whole process of getting away from it all over again.  There is no excuse for this, only that the internet has made it incredibly easy for very ignorant people to feel an overwhelming sense of power, and to abuse it.

what a rip off Intelus is! No phone number!

I jsut paid for the address and phone number for a friend, now it will cost me another 5 bucks for the priviledge of the number.  Live and learn and don't use this service.

I think the new privacy bill

I think the new privacy bill might actually work. Companies really aggrevate their consumers by taking private data regarding to their personal lives. This leads to spam mails that most people do not order for that fill your inbox. If the privacy bill helps then it will be a bog help to all online customers.
